What Guardians of the Galaxy Can Teach Us About Donor Acquisition

I’ve recently been watching a lot of Marvel movies—one of my daughters has become a big fan. Sharing these stories with her has been a lot of fun, and during a recent rewatch of Guardians of the Galaxy, one scene struck me as an unexpected fundraising lesson.
In the movie, the Guardians discover an incredibly powerful stone. One character tries to hold it alone, but its power begins to destroy him. One by one, the other Guardians join hands with him, sharing the burden until they can safely contain it—and, of course, save the world.
As often happens, my mind immediately went to fundraising.
Donor acquisition is one of the most powerful growth strategies available to nonprofits. But too often, organizations expect one channel to do all the heavy lifting. As donors interact with nonprofits in increasingly complex ways, that’s simply no longer realistic.
The strongest acquisition programs don’t rely on a single channel—they combine the strengths of digital, direct mail, phone, and text to create a coordinated donor experience.

Every Channel Has a Different Job
Not every acquisition channel is designed to accomplish the same thing. Each brings unique strengths, and understanding these differences can help organizations make smarter investments.
Recently, we’ve worked with several nonprofits that wanted to launch large-scale direct mail acquisition programs but had little or no acquisition history. Before making a significant investment in mail, there are important questions to explore and answer.
Digital acquisition is often the fastest and most cost-effective way to gather such answers. For example:
- Which message or offer resonates most with prospective donors?
- Do certain images or creative approaches perform better than others?
- Do prospective donors already know who you are and why your mission matters, or is building awareness the top priority?
- Which audiences or interest groups are initially most responsive?

Digital testing provides these valuable insights more quickly—and without the expense of printing and postage.
Building on What You Learn

Once these questions have been answered, direct mail can take any proven messages and strategies and scale them to reach the right audience, helping grow your donor file efficiently.
At the same time, digital shouldn’t disappear. Instead, it should work alongside mail by reinforcing your message, preparing prospective donors for the mail they’ll receive, sharing stories of impact, and providing additional opportunities to give if they miss or set aside the mail piece.
Phone outreach and text messaging also play an important supporting role. They help keep your organization top of mind, answer donor questions, and create more personal connections that strengthen relationships.
Better Together
We don’t have to guess.
When acquisition channels work together instead of independently, they generate better data, reduce uncertainty, and help organizations make more confident decisions. The result is a more efficient acquisition strategy, lower overall costs, and more opportunities to connect people with your mission.

No, we’re probably not superheroes.
But when every channel contributes what it does best, your nonprofit is better equipped to reach more donors, serve more people, and make a bigger impact than you ever thought possible. And that’s a pretty heroic outcome.
